Another four great weeks have passed in this last Eräkeskus winter under my leadership. We were able to welcome many repeating guests. And also new guests who continue to impress us. For example, an over-80-year-old who was on a sled for the first time and mastered a "Winter Week Plus" with ease and flying colors. Or children and young people who show us adults how carefree sledding can be, without fear of falling, respecting the dogs' energy, but without shyness or fear—just that youthful lightheartedness. We also receive comments with justifiable pride from guests who have already done several tours on other farms: "I've never had such a strong team," Tundra, Luna, Hazel, and Inari. Yes, even our oldies are still giving it their all!
This week, all the dogs (and guides) have to really push themselves once more, as it's the last fully booked week. After that, the number of tours and guests will slowly be reduced, and the first dogs will soon be able to start their well-deserved down-training and then begin their summer break. Benni just returned from the GoWest and Ruunaa Tour, Nicolas will start for Bears Trail, Simone will then guide again a Winter Week Plus towards the end of the week, Cedric will take over the remaining day trips of the Winter Week for beginners, and Svenja will be in charge of the snowshoe hikes. Tonight, the temperature dropped again to below -20°C, but during the day, the sun is already strong, sending warming rays from the blue sky down onto the dog teams and guests. Perfect conditions for tours and maintaining the trails for the upcoming tours!
We experienced a special highlight just about three weeks ago when a family of lynx killed a deer near the "Scouts' Home." We noticed it on a nighttime walk with our dogs, and then set up the wildlife camera and were able to capture unusual and rare images. Over the next few days, the lynx took the dead deer to "safety," meaning they dragged it a little further away from our trail and walking area. Now, only a few remnants of fur remain. It was impressive that our dogs didn't run more than 8 meters from the spot where it was killed, and none of them were distracted by scents or tracks.
There are still 3.5 weeks of touring season left, after which all the dogs will begin their down-training, take a break, and catch their breath. Until then, we'll continue to enjoy every kilometer, whether it's with passengers, enjoying fondue or raclette in the hut, or enjoying the beautiful late winter weather on the trails, and we're happy for every guest who gets to experience this!
