By Mountain-Bike along the Russian Border

The most beautiful thing in North-Karelia - for me - is the untouched nature, far away from mass-tourism. I can only recommend you my favourite bike-tour, if you want to experience pure nature!

Program & Route

We start from the lodge and first drive on several small gravel- and sand-roads through Carelian forests around Lake Puuruu. A small detour brings us to the windshelter Suuri Piilonen whith fireplace for a short break. Then we continue on nice single-trails on "Karhunpolku". We refill our water-bottles from River Hähnijoki and bike on to Lake Jynkkälampi, where we enjoy a longer break.  If you want, you can take a bath in the lake - very refreshing and clean! It does not really get dark in Finnish summer, so we have no time-pressure. But still we have to continue a bit. The end of todays trip is our cabin Aittokoski, where we arrive after totally about 55 km biking. On the last stretch we stop at a memorial-cabin fro World-War-2/winter-war between Finnland and Russia in 1939/40. After arrival in Aittokoski, we enjoy a nice dinner and a sauna.

After a good breakfast next morning, we start our way back direction of the lodge. This time we pass even closer to the Russian Border. Passing by lakes, rivers, swamps, we drive around 32 km back to Eräkeskus. A lot of forests, a lot of silnce. That's what makes North-Karelia so special!

Motivated? Then welcome to join me! You need only a small rucksack to carry food, liner for the night and some clothes to change!
