The first 2 weeks of January are over. The new year started with a longer, extreme cold period. Down to -40 C were reached in our corner of Finnland, which made it impossible for us to offer the sledrides to the overnight.-cabin. At such low temperatures we do not run the dogs anymore, safety for dogs and of course humans comes first. But the cabin-overnights were offered by car and a short walk from the road to the cabin and our guests appreciated it. Thanks to all our guests for accepting the program-changes. Thanks God this cold period is over now and the last week we could offer again all programs as published. Last night was also freezing cold -32C, but this is nothing compared to even 8 - 10 degrees lower. Useage of firewood, straw and dogfood goes up to highest level in these conditions. But all involved have well deserved it! For a short while, beginning of this week, we reached then even light plus-degrees, the up & down of temperatures is hard to take! But thanks to the clear, cold nights we could see even some polarlights during the new years-week.
The sun was almost daily in good mood, showing us the best possible light-magic. If you still believe, that we live in the dark here during winter,, then the new pictures might give you a better idea. Days are also already getting longer, just a few minutes per day, but we enjoy it! We are at 5 1/2 hours now per day.
Snowshoeing was a well appreciated alternative to the cancelled sledrides during the last weeks. As long as one moves around, not only gets pulled around, the cold is much easier to take. And as soon as the lunch-place is reached, our guides make a fire, which is then much appreciated by everybiody. Of course, preparing the sausage has to be done quickly, otherwise it freezes on top and gets dark below... Winter-BBQ is a questiion of training!
During the weekend we now get new guests for the programs Bears Trail, Winterweek, Winterweek Plus and Kalevala. Curious to see, what weather offers them during their holiday-week and we will keep you up to date!
